Screen addiction contributes to global warming

You can bike to work and still think of yourself as an environmentalist. However, if you sit down in front of a TV screen or computer and immerse yourself in watching your favorite TV series or Youtube videos, know that you are participating in the slow destruction of our planet.

We are used to measuring the harm caused to nature by the amount of waste we produce or the amount of car fuel consumed. In the near future, this black list will be added to one more column - the use of the Internet.

According to the Greenpeace data center, over the next two years, the share of information technology in global energy consumption will increase to 13% per year. For comparison, agriculture and transport consume about the same amount. Of this amount, 21% will come from streaming video users.

The secret is that it is more profitable and convenient than buying DVDs or BluRay discs. Sitting at the screen and watching an endless series of films and TV series, hardly anyone thinks about the increase in emissions of combustion products from thousands of power plants.

True, most of the largest Internet companies today are striving to use renewable energy sources, while advertising them in parallel. However, another problem arises here: in order to satisfy the growing demand for Internet services, more and more energy is required, the need for which alternative energy does not have time to compensate.
