The Chinese news agency Xinhua began to use several virtual TV presenters to run the news block. An avatar named Xin Xiaowei was jointly developed by Xinhua News Agency and the Sogou search engine.
3D character modeled after real-life reporter Zhao Wanwei. Its digital counterpart can mimic human voices, facial expressions, lip movements and demeanor using only inputted text.
Miss Xin Xiaowei is the youngest character in Xinhua's growing family of virtual TV presenters. In 2018, the agency created a digital announcer named Qiu Hao, which uses machine learning to mimic the voices, facial expressions, and gestures of real TV hosts.
In 2019, Xinhua presented a Russian-language version, developed jointly with the ITAR TASS news agency and timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia.
However, Xin Xiaowei is the first AI presenter in 3D. Its purpose is to report on behalf of Xinhua on the work done before the annual congress of the Chinese Communist Party and the just opened session of the National People's Congress.
