Sony has unveiled a new 48-megapixel IMX586 sensor, currently the highest in a mobile camera, and is expected to hit smartphones shortly.
With such a high resolution, the pixel size will be reduced to 0.8 microns, which usually leads to a decrease in light sensitivity. However, with the help of intelligent technology Quad Bayer, thanks to the merging of neighboring points, it was possible to obtain an effective pixel size of 1.6 microns.
As you know, the larger the pixel size, the better the light sensitivity in low light. For comparison, one of the best "shooting" phones - Google Pixel 2 has a camera with a pixel size of 1.4 microns. In reality, this means that Sony has managed to create a sensor that combines immense detail with excellent light sensitivity and low noise. True, to be sure of this, you will have to be patient while waiting for the appearance of new items on the market.
The compact CMOS sensor has a diagonal of 8 mm, which will allow you to place it even in the smallest smartphones. Also, the camera will be able to produce photos and videos in 4K format at a speed of 90 frames per second. Smartphones with IMX586 are expected to be on sale next year.
